Domaine Rotier – Sketch 2023

Domaine Rotier - Red Sketch and White Sketch

Sketch 2023 is the sketch I would like to make every year. Alain Rotier , winemaker, AOP Gaillac.

Domaine Rotier: innovative consistency

Domaine Rotier distinguishes itself through its profound respect for the Gaillac terroir . This approach is reflected in its sustainable viticultural practices and its early commitment to biodiversity. While remaining true to the winemaking traditions of the Gaillac region, Domaine Rotier also demonstrates innovation. Renowned for the consistency and quality of its wines, it continues to evolve its winemaking techniques. The driving force behind this is to enhance the expressive authenticity of its wines . This innovative consistency testifies to a firm commitment to local winemaking excellence.

Sketch: a range vinified without sulphites

For several years, the Esquisse wines have showcased the authenticity and technical expertise of the estate . Their production relies on a perfect mastery of sulfite-free winemaking . The winemaker's art lies in using this method to achieve the truest expression of the fruit . This is all the more remarkable as it aims to restore the varietal fullness of the indigenous Gaillac grape varieties . In other words, it's about placing their expressiveness front and center. Over time, the Esquisse wines have become true reflections of the Gaillac identity. More broadly, they occupy a distinctive place among the unique wines of Southwest France.

The signature: a serious terroir

One of the unique characteristics of Domaine Rotier is its terroir. The vineyard is rooted in a thick layer of gravel . Composed of sedimentary gravel and pebbles, these soils force the vines to seek their water and nutrients deep within the soil. This results in grapes with increased concentration and minerality . In summer, the thermal inertia of the gravel contributes to nighttime temperature regulation. This phenomenon promotes optimal ripening of the grapes. This winemaking context gives Domaine Rotier wines their distinctive organoleptic qualities, characteristic of the Esquisse range: aromatic intensity , structural balance , and a delicate minerality.

Red sketch 2023

“Historically, it was the red that came first, about ten years ago,” Alain Rotier tells us. The cuvée is always based primarily on Duras , which makes up at least 80% of the blend. For the 2023 vintage, this wine finds its perfect balance through its combination with 10% Syrah , 7% Braucol , and 2% Prunelard . Esquisse Rouge 2023 is therefore a true expression of the four main grape varieties of Gaillac . Esquisse Rouge 2023 is a wine with an absolutely delicious character, undeniably easy-drinking, fully fruity, and subtly floral. With aromas of small red berries and a hint of violet, this highly accomplished vintage is very likely approaching optimal balance. For the winemaker, “this is the cuvée the estate would like to make every year.”

White sketch 2023

The white grape varieties planted at Domaine Rotier are largely dominated by Len de Lel , also known as Loin de l'Œil. Like Duras for red wines, Len de Lel is native to the Gaillac vineyards . The 2023 Esquisse white wine is designed to preserve its typicity. This grape variety is distinguished by a certain roundness, the balance of which is achieved through a refreshing finish. In the 2023 Esquisse white , Len de Lel, which makes up 80% of the blend, resonates with Sauvignon Blanc, which comprises 20% of the wine. The result is a delicate aromatic complexity, complemented on the palate by a well-integrated vivacity. The nose lingers on aromas of white and yellow fruits—such as peach and pear—touched by hints of herbs—like anise, mint, and verbena.
