Vineyards, Grape Varieties and Winegrowers

A contrasting appellation defined by two distinct terroirs
Land of wines since antiquity, Fitou is also the oldest AOC of Languedoc, recognized since 1948. Located in the department of Aude, this typically Mediterranean terroir is often swept by the tramontane or Cers, the two prevailing winds. Having the virtue of dispelling clouds, they contribute to a high rate of sunshine, favoring the mild winters while the summers are marked by a dry climate. Shared between the Mediterranean and Corbières AOC Fitou The vineyard is spread across two terroirs: to the east, overlooked by the Leucate plateau, it reaches the sea and the lagoons. Here, it benefits from predominantly clay-limestone soils. To the west, on steeper slopes where schist is present, it nestles against Mont Tauch.
Fitou wines
From this variety of geological layers emerges a whole palette of expressive nuances. As in the Aspres neighboring, black grape varieties dominate with Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. They give substance to solar and complex red wines, whose specificities inherited from the two terroirs of the appellation make it possible to perfectly reconcile the taste associations of land and sea. Contributing to the richness of the vineyard, Rivesaltes natural sweet wine et Muscat de Rivesaltes are also produced on the terroir of the appellation.
